Guest Bedroom Makeover
Day 8: Reading Lamps
**Note: This is part of a 12-step bedroom makeover series. Find the previous steps at the bottom of this post.**
(channel your inner Osmond before singing) I'm a little bit viiiiintage...I'm a little in-dus-tri-alllllll...
I've been loving a slick industrial vibe mixed into highly textural organic elements lately. As evidenced by my DIY nightstand post and also how I ate my granola with a blue plastic spoon this morning.
(On a totally unrelated note...apparently we can't go three meals without doing the dishes around here. Good to know.)
It should come as no surprise, then, that I went with this same look for reading lamps in the guest bedroom:
I bought two $7 clamp lamps from Lowe's, taped over the electrical inside, spray painted the inner side gold and the outer side blue. I like the peekaboo goldness inside. And also the pairing with this DIY rustic-chic headboard.
Apparently these babies can "only" handle 200W bulbs. Hello, indoor sunshine. Not wanting to frighten away, slash, permanently blind any guests, I stuck with a meagre 60W and may even downgrade to 40W.
I'm pretty happy with them...and the <$20 total price tag, of course.
Come back for Day 9: Stuff on the Walls (super technical title, I know).
And also? Try to have a very wonderful day today, whatever your circumstances may be. Because life is definitely hard...but also beautiful. Thanks for stopping by my little blog.

I really, really like the gold on the inside!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cossette. I agree. I think that's honestly the single detail that makes the difference between these and just a randomly spray painted clamp lamp.
DeleteI've been wanting to paint my mismatched pair of reading lamps in our master bedroom but was afraid the paint would catch on fire. Did you use a special kind/brand of spray paint? Totally wanna do this.
ReplyDeleteI didn't. The bulb wattage is low enough that I'm confident it will be fine.
DeleteThese are SUPER cute! :) What a great idea. :)
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely blog. Stop by my nexk of the woods sometime.
XO~
Amanda
Well, thanks, Amanda. I'll do that.
DeleteI love love love the vibe of these lamps. So super simple, stylish, practical... All of the above and more!

Don't forget "cheap." :) Thanks, Crystelle.
DeleteOoh I love these! What a great idea! I'm a new follower ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jamie. And welcome.
DeleteOh. My. Word. I LOVE the rustic and industrial feel of this! Those lights are great with the headboard!! LOVE it!!
ReplyDeleteJenna @ rainonatinroof.com
Thanks, Jenna. And I just checked out your coke crate tie holder. Genius, lady. For real!
DeleteLOVE, LOVE, LOVE vintage mixed with industrial! That actually defines my living room! I am telling you, we are kindred (decorating) spirits! And I think kindred (sense of humor) spirits as well.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to Stuff on the Walls. :)
Wait, I just tried to stalk you and couldn't find a blog anywhere. Do you have one? Not that you have to, of course, but now I want to see your living room, Amy! Seriously.
DeleteSo glad you like coming by here. Because I love doing this blog, especially for people like you. Fo' shiz.
EEK! I have a BUNCH of these from my "build your own light box" experience and now they just sit around. Hello! Now they have a purpose!
ReplyDeleteI'd love it if you would share this over at Parlo and LOGI for F-it Friday! http://www.parloandlogi.com/f-it-friday-anything-goes-link-up-party-7/
Off to pin this! :)
Yes, makes millions of these, Chrissy! Seriously. Or, fine, at least one.
DeleteThanks for the link party invite; I linked up. :)
I love these! I have one of these metal clip on lamps myself and was thinking of spray painting it to match our room decor. Yours look awesome!!!
ReplyDeleteI've loved ours so far, for sure.
DeletePerfect shabby chic! Very inspiring for our guest bedroom if we ever get around to renovating.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I know the feeling. Our guest bedroom has been a glorified storage room with a bed for the past 6.5 years. Heh. "Welcome to our dust box, guests. Glad you're here."
DeleteVery cute lamps!
ReplyDeleteThose are great! My husband has one in the garage...think he'd notice if it went "missing?"
ReplyDeleteNah. Or you could always paint one for his workshope. I'm sure he'd appreciate neon pink... :)
DeleteLove these! They turned out so cute!
ReplyDeleteLovin the gold on the inside!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty!
Thanks, Jen. The gold on the inside is my very favorite touch.
DeleteI'm loving these! Simple but cooooool!
ReplyDeleteI love all things simple...and "cooooool" is the icing on the cake. Thank you, Maureen!
DeleteOh this is just the perfect reading lamp I've been looking for! Thanks for sharing it and I'm happy to be following via GFC. Looking forward to more!
ReplyDeleteHooray for finding the "perfect" match! I love it when that happens. Glad to have you along, Danni.
Deletesuch a clever idea! thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMan, I love clever ideas that involve very little skill. Seriously. Makes life so much easier!
DeleteThanks for stopping by, Bonnie and/or Trish. :)
Fantastic. I wouldn't have ever thought to do that. It really looks like vintage lighting.
ReplyDeleteWhat a compliment! Because, really, there are few things as inspiring as vintage lighting. For reals.
Deleteaaaah! I have a couple of these in the garage! I never thought to paint them. They look really cool as bed lamps. Love the gold inside, too. :)
ReplyDeleteKelly
Thanks, Kelly. Just make sure, if you do paint yours, that your light bulb wattage is kept super low. I don't know what kind of heat the spray paint can handle...
DeleteI just found your blog and I am so digging your spaces! The lamps are a perfect pairing with that wood! Rock on! I look forward to following along!
ReplyDeleteThank you! (And Welcome!) I love it when some of my stuff resonates with people. And I'm happy to rock on dot com.
DeleteI love these colours and the lamps! Nice job!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jessie. I, too, am enjoying how the pale blue is a color but still vibes with the serene neutral space.
DeleteLooks great Brittney - especially the gold on the inside!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to a Round Tuit!
Hope you have a fabulous week!
Jill @ Creating my way to Success

Thanks, Jill. It's the little things that make a difference, isn't it.
DeleteI love these!!!! I have to pin this because I am going to do this one for sure. So glad you linked up to my party. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Marcie @ I Gotta Try That
I'm telling you, any project that involves <$10 and spray paint? I'm in. Allllll in.
DeleteAmazing.. I LOVE it.. We are featuring YOU tonight via pin'inspirational Thursday.. Hope you stop ina nd party with us.. Happy Hump Day.. xo
ReplyDeleteWow, thank you Marilyn! Of course I'll stop by and e-party. I only wish the calories I'm going to consume whilst doing so would be e-calories... Sigh.
DeleteI love industrial style lighting -- and cheap and simple is great too! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDelete- Lora
Me too, Lora. And you're welcome. :)
Deletegotta love spray paint! your lamps look great!
ReplyDeletegail
Amen, Gail. Amen.
Delete(and thanks!)
I love these! They turned out fabulous! I love the gold peaking out at you. What wonderful reading lamps!
ReplyDeleteWell, thank you! I love what you said, "the gold peeking out at you." Lovely description. :)
DeleteLove the blue! And you've inspired me! I've been thinking about attaching a lamp to a vintage door that I prop in my family room. This is exactly what I need! Off to Lowes!!!
ReplyDeleteAtta girl, Sharon. Lowes it up!
DeleteFound you via Project Inspire and well.... I'm inspired! Thanks for the post and idea! Definitely pinning this - B.
ReplyDeleteHooray for inspiration! (and double hooray for inspiration that hits below $10...)
DeleteWhat a creative idea! Love the headboard too! I always see those lamps at the hardware store...can't beat the price for lamps! And so clever to paint them! Thank you so much for sharing, Brittany. I'm including a link back in tomorrow's DIY highlights. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm super duper honored. And also? "Clever" is one of my favorite adjectives.
DeleteBrittney, these are so darn cute! Just saw this on MRPL feature and had to pop over and tell you how adorable they are. Not only are they functional and space saving, they are stylin! Great job.
ReplyDeleteAwww, thanks Stephanie. Seriously. Means a lot that you'd take the time to come by.
DeleteBeautifully done!!!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, really like that dash of gold. It totally takes these to a whole new level. Well done! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. Can't wait to check out the rest.
p
You and me both, girl. Dashes of gold make the world go round. Actually, they don't. But they SHOULD.
DeleteHi, I have been shopping your site this afternoon & tonight. I was wondering if you could share the paint color numbers(code) for your wall paint and this spray paint you used on these lamps. I LOVE them. I don't have any pallets, but I plan to make my own headboard out of just pine or whatever these cheap... errr inexpensive 1x4x8' boards are that I found at HD. I bought a couple for something else and have to wait to afford more, but I now have a much better plan for my own bed.... yep this post did it for me. I have a plan.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I got sidetracked earlier with reading so many of your posts... but this is the one that Roeshel posted on her DIY Showoff Blog that brought me here earlier.
And I finally figured out that I was not signed up & think I am now.
Wall paint color is Husky Grey by Glidden. Spray paint is Valspar brand...one of the light blue shades. Thank you! And I'm glad that you have a plan! That's a big first step, for sure.
DeleteOh yes, if I had the money to spend, I would be at Lowes tomorrow to buy two of these lamps also. I guess it is a good thing the home stores do NOT have layaway. In my case anyway. GRIN.....
ReplyDeleteHaha. I know what you mean. HD & Lowes are trouble.
DeleteLove this idea! And the color combo is great. I'm featuring it the PoPP Spotlight this week. Thanks for joining the party.
ReplyDeleteGenius! Thanks for the idea! If I ever have a place to try this out, I will let you know.
ReplyDeleteLove this and want to get one of these clamp lamps for my son's room, looked in Lowes the other day but couldn't find it... in which section of the store do you find them? Also thanks for the great headboard tutorial! Never thought of using pallet wood- I want to make a picket fence looking headboard for my daughters room:).
ReplyDeleteI'm not really sure where to find them in the store, but I found them on the website by searching for "work light."
DeleteHey! I love these and just sent my boyfriend off to Lowes to buy me a pair! I was wondering if there is a concern of the outside of these lamps getting too hot and there is a way of insulating them? Or did you not find it to be a problem?
ReplyDeleteI was wondering the same thing as Faye. :) I'm looking for some clamp lamps (that aren't a tiny LED spotlight) for my sons' bunkbeds, but I'm wondering if the metal shades would get hot to the touch.
ReplyDeleteHi! Love these. Do you know what specific lamp you used (brand/make, model)? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI think this is it: Bayco 150-Watt Incandescent Portable Work Light, Item #: 203213, Model #: FL-300NPDQ12. I found them on the Lowe's website. I may have to check it out at the store to make sure it's the same diameter.
DeleteI couldn't find the lowe's website, I found it here but it seems expensive.
