Master Bedroom Makeover
Day 12: Odds & Ends and Putting it All Together
** Note: This post is part of a 12-step series in my master bedroom makeover. Links to the other (previous) steps are listed at the end of this post.
Welp, this is the day it all comes together. My goal was to do this makeover for <$200. I thought it would be easy. Turned out to be harder than I thought. I'll break down the budget for you a little later in this post. First let's enjoy some photos, shall we?
This has been a lovely experience, changing up a room so rapidly so that I can feel immediate gratification. I'm sure that some things will change over time; honestly, some things have already changed since I posted about them. That's the way design works, isn't it?
Change it up to work with your life.
So. Pop yourself some corn, sit back, and enjoy the quantitudinous photographic montage that is my husband's and my new master bedroom.
Here's where we started, remember?
And here's where we are today:
I can't get enough of this duvet cover, you guys. To me, all-white ruching is the perfect touch in the room. Maybe a little feminine, but I tried to de-girlify other areas to strike a balance. Like with the burlap.
It's a small room, as far as masters go, but I love how it seems more spacious now. A more functional layout and a tighter and lighter color palette made that happen, I think.
Clipped the dead reeds from my front yard just this morning. Aren't they pretty here?
I like the various shades and textures of white and ivory here. For me, it adds depth and interest.
The golden butterfly is for my earrings and hair elastics at the end of the day when I'm too tired to get out of bed and put them away. Don't tell me that doesn't happen to you.
Embroidered pillowcases.
My husband's side of the bed. More masculine, but still works with the room overall.
Switched out the standard Ikea issue knobs.
I love our bed. Really and truly. Love it!
Budget breakdown:
- Wall paint 1 gallon $28
- Curtain fabric $36
- Burlap $15
- Curtain knobs $12
- Headboard fabric $30
- Headboard upholstery nails/tacks $15 (bonus: I have leftovers)
- Misc. fabric $25 (bonus: leftovers)
- Chandelier supplies $20 (bonus: leftovers)
- Duvet cover $35 (2 flat sheets + grosgrain ribbon)
- Spray paint for vanity chair $4
- Handles for tray $5
- Everything else: Reused/repurposed FREE!
TOTAL: $225
Sounds corny, probably, but I smile every time I walk by and/or into our bedroom now. Absolutely worth it.
Annnnd, one more time. Just for kicks:
Hooray for the power of a makeover!

Wow. I've been reading your series step by step, and the transformation (and the price tag!) has been truly impressive. Good work! I'm trying to decide if I want that chandelier enough to spend the hours punching circles...
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cossette! Yes, you should absolutely do the chandelier. It's such an inexpensive option for a pretty light fixture, and though it takes a bit of time, it's absolutely worth it. Would love to see yours if you ever do one! Send me a photo or the URL, it would make me so happy!
Deletethat is really an awesome transformation! i bet this is your favorite place now :)

It is, Rea. Seriously. I love this place...and so does my husband and so do my kids. Heaven!
DeleteAbsolutely beautiful!! Fantastic job my friend!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ali. I love it, and (even better) so does Paul. Win-win!
DeleteLooks great - and I love that you did it so closely to your goal budget AND for very little in the scheme of things.
ReplyDeleteNothing beats meeting (well, almost) your budget goals, right? DIYing is the best.
DeleteBeautiful makeover. I'm checking out the rest of the process! Love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ashley. It's like reading the last chapter of a book first...the only way to read, in my mind. (Especially if the book is scary/intense. I'm such a wimp.)
DeleteSo love britt. It turned out fab. How fun and what a go getter. It seriously takes me years to accomplish anything. Sad. Can't believe you made that chandy for $20. So jeal of that. And that little green and white bowl. Ahhh!
ReplyDeleteI love that bowl, too! I got four of them in Seattle last year during our anniversary getaway, and I wish I'd gotten 20 more, in every color. Oh, Anthropologie, you'll be the death of my wallet...
DeleteSo pretty! I love the rug - where did you find that gem?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Chelsea! Rug information here: http://smartgirlstyle.blogspot.com/2012/08/how-to-paint-rug-chevron.html
DeleteThis transformation was absolutely gorgeous! Know what I loved best? The small bedroom, similar to every bedroom size I've ever known. I get so tired of seeing HUGE spaces!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you said that, Christina. It's how I feel as well. My home is filled with pretty smallish rooms, and it's just what I've got to work with! So, yeah. There's only so much you can do with the square footage you've got, you know? Thanks for your comment. Made my day.
DeleteYour room is so very pretty. You did a wonderful job making the room cheerfull and cozy!
ReplyDeleteCheerful + cozy = major compliment. Thanks, Robin!
DeleteSaw your post on The Shabby Creek Cottage...what a beautiful makeover. Love the mix of patterns on the pillows and that bedding is just gorgeous! Great job!
ReplyDeleteThe bedding is one of my favorite touches as well. It just makes such a huge difference... Hooray for a sewing machine and WalMart flat sheets, right?
DeleteWhat a great transformation! I love the desk chair - that is my favorite part.
ReplyDeleteSince doing this chair, I've definitely decided I need more ikat in my life. In unexpected areas. Thanks so much, Trisha.
DeleteBeautiful job, Brittney!!! The ruffles, the chandy, the sweet pops of color......love it!
ReplyDeletexoxo laurie
We need to be real-life friends, Laurie. Wanna know why? "Chandy." That's why. I think we'll get along just fine.
DeleteLove it! It turned out beautiful and calm.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up! :)
"Calm" is one of the best things a bedroom can be, right? I love this space. Thanks, Kenz.
DeleteThanks for the invite, Mariel! I did.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fabulous! What an amazing transformation - great work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking to a Round Tuit!
Hope you have a fabulous week!

Beautiful. Great planning, work and especially great job on saving your money.
ReplyDeleteI adore your Duvet cover... and you serisouly only spent $35 for sheets and Grosgrain ribbon????? Dang, I wish I could find your buys!!
You chose a remarkably elegant style for your masters' bedroom. The design is soft and comfortable, very much fitting for a bedroom. I would suggest you move the lamps farther away from the curtain and the bed, though. I don't know the shade protector of that bulb, but it's important to be safe. Try moving it to the center.
ReplyDeleteRandell Jeffries
I absolutely LOVE the duvet cover. My very very favorite part is that it makes you smile every time you walk by it. That is the best! Great job!
ReplyDeleteFabulous bedroom makeover Britney...:)..xxx
ReplyDeleteGreat job on a tight budget! When I saw the breakdown, I was surprised that you made a headboard. I had to go back and look at it. It blends in with the wall and drapes. If it were my bedroom, I would get some painters tape and fabric paint and give it a pop of color.
